This year, mates returns with issue 002 STRANGERS. Through art, photography, essays and creative writing, 50 emerging creatives explore the strange, stranger, and other in contemporary UK culture.

Moving from anonymity, immigration and algorithmic prediction to the diasporic experience of land, British horror, and Afrofuturism, the issue asks what the stranger reveals about life in the UK today: who can be known, predicted, controlled or admitted?

Contributors were selected through an open call by our Selection Committee: Julita Mahrer Viñas, Nikki Nita Ramírez, Stella Smith and Temitayo Famakinwa.

All proceeds are reinvested to support emerging creatives.
